About Us:
The St. Louis Chess Club is open to everyone in the school. We would like to encourage everyone to come down and play some chess! The adult supervisor of the chess club is Jon Ishii. He is also a math teacher at St. Louis School. The president of the chess club is Kellen King. He is a sophomore at St. Louis. The chess club officially meets every Thursday, although you are welcome to come and play chess any other day that Mr. Ishii is present. During chess club meetings, Mr. Ishii does not stress the teaching of chess strategy. He just wants to be there to give you hints and ideas and wants everyone to have fun! During chess club meetings, Mr. Ishii also announces any current tournaments that are coming up and explains all the details. Chess is a fun an exciting game with many possibilities. Once you master this game, you will find that the results are very rewarding. I would also like to add that chess is a very fun and competitive sport. Chess may help you develop your thinking skills. After you learn the game of chess, you may find that your thoughts in decision making are a little clearer. You may also find that your mind may be a little clearer when deciding your priorities. Chess allows you to develop skills to "see the big picture." Chess is a game that everyone should learn! |

Monthly Quiz Contest:
What's the best move?
How to participate:
(1) View the picture file. Click here. (2) To download the file, right-click on the picture after it's done loading. Then click on "Save picture as..." you may then save the picture file on you computer. Decide the best move for the white player and the black player. (3) You must record the coordinates of the moves in a special way according to the algebraic notations.
Like this: The eight files from left to right are labeled "a"-"h", the eight ranks from bottom to top are labeled from 1-8. For example, when you look at a chess board, the bottom left square is labeled "a1." The top left square is labeled "a8." These are the coordinates. Use this method to express the squares in which the pieces (King, Queen, Knight, Pawn, Bishop, etc.) move. (Ex. King-a1-b2. This means that the king moves from the bottom left square, up diagonal to the right one square.)
(4) After you determine the best move for each player, write an e-mail to [email protected] with the name of the piece to move, the starting coordinate, and the coordinate you wish the piece to move to for the black and white players. (5) The person with the right answer, or the persons closest to the right answer will have their name posted on our website for a month! This is until the next month's quiz. (6) Good luck!
All entries must be submitted by 04/30/99 to be eligible for this month's (April) quiz.
Winner(s) will be posted on 05/01/99.
